Over the years that the refugee boats have been arriving, much of the debris, mostly deflated rubber boats and life jackets, has been cleaned up by various volunteer groups.
The north east shore of the island still needs much work. This is where Dirty Girls will be cleaning this summer.
It will be hard work, but we also like to make things fun and meaningful and also respect people’s personal abilities.
Work will be done four days per week from 6:30am – 11:30am, so that we won’t be working in the heat of the day.
Some people may be volunteering with other organisations during the afternoon or on other days.
We just ask that once you have made a commitment, that you stick to being ready to work at 6:30am on the days you specify.
All tools etc required will be supplied.
Accommodation is up to each participant and we suggest Panagouda or Thermi for easy accessibility.
Everyone will be expected to make their own way to the cleanup starting point which is at Pamfila harbour. This probably means hiring a car. (International Drivers Licence required by non EU citizens.)
There is a particular hotel in Thermi which we recommend. Not only is it a lovely place to stay, but the owners and staff are actively supportive of refugees.
We do ask those from non EU countries to show proof of travel insurance.
